Make some branches only accessible with certain characters (like maybe a far off door that can only be reached with multiple jumps). I’ve parroted this idea loads of times before, but really all you need is Melee Adventure style levels with branching paths depending on how you complete the level, just like Starfox 64. It got repetitive because you had to complete it so many times for every character trophy, but since trophies are more or less non-existent now, I think a more fleshed-out Melee Adventure mode would be ideal. I think Melee Adventure mode was the most fun of the bunch. I like the variety of Spirit Battles, and I thought the map design was fun. I literally do not remember Smash 4 at all.Ĥ. Subspace Emissary was definitely ambitious, but even as a kid I felt the levels weren’t actually any fun to play through. It had nice variety when it came to representing different franchises.Ģ. I think it nailed the “Nintendo crossover” concept the best. Fighting primids in some nondescript generic location for 85% of the game? Pass.ġ. Infiltrating the Halberd as Meta Knight, Lucario and Snake? Neat. Fighting Meta Ridley on the back of the Falcon Flyer? Neat. The best part of Subspace are the bosses and the few times where you're in actual Nintendo themed locations.

World of Light gets off a little better since the moment to moment fights are far more creative and reference fueled there, but I think I prefer Melee's Adventure Mode overall. Subspace Emissary and World of Light are really, really cool but are ridiculously bloated to the point that they feel like a slog during their last third or so. It's compact and doesn't feel like it overstays its welcome at all, but it does make the little time you spend on any given run of it count.

It's got traditional fights and & Nintendo themed exploring/platforming segments sprinkled in, there's a bunch of secrets to get depending on how well and how fast you play through it. Melee's Adventure Mode kind of feels like a standalone arcade game in many ways.
